From Anita Wood
I never get accustomed to funerals. Often, I leave wishing I’d known that person more. I’m reminded that we live among awesome, rare, brave, accomplished people… we need to know them! This happened again last week too.
As a young adult, I began wondering about people and death: what did this person ‘live’ for? What did all their achievements mean today? What ‘wealth’ did they take along to eternity? Where did they spend all their energies and money, and how did that impact today? A similar assessment and evaluation continue to impact my funeral experiences, especially when its someone dear to me, and this helps keep my life on the right path.
Perhaps you’ve heard, funeral clothes have no pockets! It’s the intangible, eternal, Godly investments we take with us. The funeral this week was a prime example: a very successful, active, engaged, accomplished, educated man wanted one single thing: that those he loved to know about Jesus and be born-again.
Yes, we leave a legacy. Are you working on yours? A song that expresses my thoughts is “May Who Come Behind Me Find Me Faithful”. I want to be found faithful and courageous as I follow God.
But also: we receive an inheritance! We are an heir! And, joint heirs! Scriptures remind us that we are heirs to promises and received them as an inheritance! Heb. 6:12. We will be among the saints, Acts 26:18. We are an heir with Jesus, Gal. 3:29.
There is only one caveat, however… this inheritance is not a group activity. This inheritance is ours only because at some point in time, we were born-again into God’s forever family. I hope you find joy in your relationship with Jesus, who loves us as an heir! Let’s continue proclaiming Him, encouraging one another along the way
